Marie Curie: Overachiever who cooked, cleaned, discovered radium, and raised a Nobel Prize-winning daughter, but who never forgot how to make a good pierogi.

Maria Sklodowska-Curie (born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867) was one of the first woman scientists to win worldwide fame. One of the great scientists of this century. She had degrees in mathematics and physics. Winner of two Nobel Prizes, for Physics in 1903 and for Chemistry in 1911.
Scorpio Super Woman: Marie Curie
She conducted pioneering research on radioactivity and discovered Polonium and Radium. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person (and the only woman) to win twice and the only person to win twice in multiple sciences.
Maria Sklodowska was born as the fifth and youngest child of Bronislawa Boguska, a pianist, singer, and teacher, and Wladyslaw Sklodowski, a professor of mathematics and physics. When she was little and living in Poland, her nickname was Manya. From childhood, she was known for her remarkable memory.
In 1891, she went to Paris to study physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne. Later she met Pierre Curie, professor of the School of Physics.
Marie was married to Pierre Curie, it was their mutual interest in natural sciences that drew them together. Pierre was an instructor at the School of Physics and Chemistry, and Marie was looking for larger laboratory space, Pierre was able to find some space for Marie where she was able to begin work.
Scorpio Super Woman: Marie Curie
Marie Curie’s Scorpio Sun gives great sensitivity and an instinctive feel for things that are hidden or invisible. It gives the ability to penetrate far into unknown realms that were previously hidden in mystery.
A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales.
Marie Curie
The Scorpio gives tenacity and intensity to go on working, digging as deep as is necessary to find the answers.

Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the one whom fame has not corrupted.
Albert Einstein
In the year 1898, they discovered both Polonium ( named after Marie’s native Poland ) and Radium. Between 1898 and 1902 the Curies published a total of 32 scientific papers. Including one that announced that, when exposed to radium, diseased, tumor-forming cells were destroyed faster than healthy cells, the key discovery for the future treatment of cancer.
Scorpio Super Woman: Marie Curie
The Curies were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903. Marie then became the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne, and devoted herself to continuing the work that they had begun together.
She received a second Nobel Prize, for Chemistry, in 1911. Marie Curie’s research was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery.
During World War One Marie Curie helped to equip ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she herself drove to the front lines.
Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.
Marie Curie
Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.

Remarkable achievements
- She was the first to use the term radioactivity for this phenomenon.
- She was the first woman in Europe to receive her doctorate of science.
- In 1903, she became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize for Physics. The award, jointly awarded to Curie, her husband Pierre, and Henri Becquerel, was for the discovery of radioactivity.
- She was also the first female lecturer, professor and head of Laboratory at the Sorbonne University in Paris (1906).
- In 1911, she won an unprecedented second Nobel Prize (this time in chemistry) for her discovery and isolation of pure radium and radium components.
- She was the first person ever to receive two Nobel Prizes.
- She was the first mother-Nobel Prize Laureate of daughter-Nobel Prize Laureate. Her oldest daughter Irene Joliot-Curie also won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1935).
- She is the first woman which has been laid to rest under the famous dome of the Pantheon in Paris for her own merits.
